Grand Prix rigs

With more than 600 custom-built rigs worldwide and as the official supplier to more than 25 one design classes, the results with a Southern Spars rig speak for themselves.

Southern Spars-rigged yachts have won the toughest, most prestigious races in the world, such as the mighty Open 60 Virbac-Paprec 3 taking victory in the 25,000nm 2010/11 Barcelona World Race. The 2011 Palma Vela also featured Southern Spars' rigs on the first, second and third-placed TP52s and numerous teams were successful with our rigs in the 2011 Audi MedCup. The first six yachts to cross the line in the 2010 Newport to Bermuda Race carried spar and rig packages from Southern Spars, and our rigs also dominated the 2007/08 Volvo Ocean Race, coming home in the first seven places.

The company also plays a major role in America's Cup campaigns for several syndicates, where the combined power of Southern Spars' RigCalc and North Sails' Membrain design software applications deliver extraordinary modeling power and accuracy.

Our patented Thin Ply Technology® composites produce lighter, stronger, safer spars than any other method. There are more than 100 EC6™ rigging packages in service delivering unprecedented performance and durability, and more than 300 experienced staff in six corners of the world.

Several projects of this nature are highlighted in the Grand Prix / racer projects section.

Tim Powell – Skipper RAN JV72: “When Rán was looking for a mast manufacturer for the IRC 72 we had no hesitation in using Southern Spars. They have unrivalled expertise and knowledge when it comes to designing rigs and are also at the forefront of bringing new ideas to the yachting market. The mast was built entirely as we wanted with no detailing errors as seen with other manufacturers. The attention to detail is impressive. Since the first commissioning of the boat the rig has been entirely reliable and has behaved as expected. The Rán team are so happy with the service provided by Southern that we have commissioned them to design and build our new TP52 spars for 2011.”
