Melges Performance Sailboats are responsible for producing two of the most successful high-performance one design racers in the world – the Melges 24 and 32. Their latest, and largest offering, the Melges 40, is a departure from their fixed-keel, single-rudder stablemates.
The new 40-footer, designed by Botin Partners Naval Architecture and produced by Premier Composites, presents a stripped-out racer that will perform well at all points of sail, but it is off the wind where she will truly excel. The canting keel and lifting single dagger-board will complement the powerful hull-shape to make this yacht a rapid reacher and downwind her big masthead kites and efficient hull offer exciting speeds.
Southern Spars has fitted the Melges 40 out with a high performance rig, constructed from high-modulus carbon fibre to be light as well as stiff, with a bend profile to exactly match its North Sails package. Twin masthead halyards and jib halyard locks make sail operation easy for inshore and offshore sailing. The Melges 40 is the second production class yacht to feature Future Fibres’ ECthree multistrand rigging.
